Paparazzi (5/10)

January 24th, 2005

Paparazzi, starring Cole Hauser and Tom Sizemore and produced by Mel Gibson, was a mildly entertaining movie. The movie is about how a rising Hollywood star, Bo Laramie (Hauser), and his family are chased down by a certain group of paparazzi, who take it too far and cause Bo to wreck his car and put his son in a coma. One of the members of the group dies in a motorcycle “accident” after a run-in with Bo, which triggers him to go after the rest of the group.

I was never quite sure who I was supposed to root for in this movie. Do I side with Bo, who’s family was put into serious danger, but is taking the law into his own hands even though the police are going to probably catch the criminals responsible? Or, do I side with the paparazzi, who are being hunted down by a crazy Hollywood actor? Seriously, I didn’t have much compassion for any of the characters in the movie because they all seemed off their rocker. Also, the main antagonist, played by Sizemore, is depicted as being out to “get” Bo, but we aren’t ever shown why. In fact, we aren’t given any history at all on Sizemore’s character, which annoyed me. And the acting is this movie is sub par - especially Bo’s wife, played by Robin Tunney. But, I guess it’s a pretty good revenge story although the plot and characters aren’t developed very well.
